Halle Jungmyeongjeon (중명전)

Wenn man dem Steinmauerweg am Palast Deoksugung folgt und in die Gasse beim Jeongdong-Theater einbiegt, kommt man zur Halle Jungmyeongjeon. Das im westlichen Stil gestaltete Gebäude wurde zwischen 1897 und 1901 vom russischen Architekten Afanasii Seredin-Sabatin erbaut und beherbergte gegen Ende der Joseon-Zeit die königliche Bibliothek. Nach einem Feuer im Palast im Jahre 1904 wurde es als Arbeitsraum von König Gojong und für Empfänge ausländischer Delegationen genutzt.
Eine tragische Berühmtheit erlangte es durch die Tatsache, dass hier 1905 der Japanisch-Koreanische Vertrag unterzeichnet wurde, der die Kolonialisierung Koreas durch Japan einleitete. Die Halle, die sich ursprünglich auf dem Palastgelände befand, ist eines der ältesten modernen Gebäude Seouls. Durch ein Feuer 1925 ist die ursprüngliche Innengestaltung leider zerstört worden, die Fassade ist aber nach wie vor im Originalzustand erhalten. Seit 2007 steht es als Teil des Palastes Deoksugung unter Denkmalschutz.

Jangchungdan-Park (장충단공원)

Der Jangchungdan-Park liegt am nordöstlichen Fuße des Bergs Namsan. Am 20. August 1895 wurde die Königin Myeongseong von japanischen Soldaten im Palast Gyeongbokgung ermordet und viele Soldaten ließen beim Versuch, die Eindringlinge zurückzuhalten, ihr Leben. Im Gedenken an diese Soldaten ließ König Gojong im November 1900 an dem Ort, wo heute das Shilla Hotel Guesthouse steht, den Schrein Jangchungdan errichten. Der Schrein wurde während des Koreakriegs zerstört, und die Gegend wurde im Jahre 1919 zu einem Park restauriert.
