Le district du cinéma de Busan n'était à l'origine qu'un ensemble de petits cinémas qui furent construits après la libération du règne colonial japonais il y a plus de cinquante ans. L'endroit fut rénové en 1996 avant la première édition du festival du film de Busan (BIFF). Ce district rénové fut nommé BIFF Square le 14 août 1996

Le BIFF Square a contribué à la renaissance de Busan en tant que ville touristique. La rue de 428 mètres allant du cinéma Buyeong à Nampo-dong au pont autoroutier Chungmu-dong est divisée en “Rue des Stars” et “Rue du Festival”. C'est dans cette rue que se tient chaque année le “Ground Opening of the BIFF Square”. Durant cette cérémonie se tient des événements tels que la prise des empreintes des stars de cinéma et Nunggot Jeomdeung.
