Suwon Nammun Market, the largest traditional market complex in Gyeonggi-do, refers collectively to a group of nine interconnected markets. These include Jidong Market, Paldalmun Market, Minari Square Market, Motgol Market, Yeongdong Market, Citizen Sangga Market, Nammun Fashion Street Market, Gucheon-dong Gongu (Tool) Market, and Nammun Rodeo Market. Its origins date back to the reign of King Jeongjo, when a permanent market was established along Jongno Street near the bell tower inside Hwaseong Fortress. At the same time, a five-day market was held outside Paldalmun Gate. Together, these early marketplaces are considered the foundation of present-day Suwon Nammun Market.

As the nation began to recover from the aftermath of the Korean War, farmers from the northern Gyeonggi-do region and Ganwon-do gathered around the old Seongdong Station (renamed ‘Hansol Donguibogam’) to sell their produce and wares. The farmers’ impromptu gathering on the fallow farmland to make their transactions soon led to the birth of a new marketplace. With the recent remodeling of the market, including the long-neglected Gyeongdong Theater, the place feels totally renewed and full of energy. Thanks to the renovation and diverse food stalls, the place is always bustling and filled with people.
