L'Observatoire Gimhae a été ouverte le 1 Février 2002 dans le cadre du Projet du Millénaire commémorative a commencé en Décembre 1998. Il a été construit pour satisfaire la curiosité du grand public sur l'univers et des corps célestes, inspirer les jeunes, et de donner à chacun une expérience unique et mémorable. L'observatoire a la forme d'un œuf, en souvenir de la légende du roi Kim Suro, le fondateur du royaume de Garak, selon laquelle, peu avant la naissance du Christ, le roi est né d'un œuf.
IOn dit que la reine du roi Suro, Heo Hwang-ok, était une princesse du pays des Indiens de Ayuta. Les équipements de navigation sophistiqués n'avaient pas encore été inventé, on peut supposer qu'elle a trouvé son chemin vers le Royaume Garak en suivant les étoiles. Il est également dit que le prince du Royaume Garak construire un observatoire sur le point culminant d'une forteresse dans la boue Jinrye afin de faire des observations astronomiques. Le lieu est encore dénommé Bibidan, ce qui signifie un endroit pour regarder les étoiles.
Ces faits historiques montrent les étoiles étaient très importants pour l'Gaya, un ancien royaume établies principalement dans la région de Gimhae. Le pic de Bunseongsan montagne, où l'observatoire est situé, offre une vue panoramique de toute la région de Gimhae-SI. La vue de la nuit de Gimhae-si, quand les étoiles sont dehors, est à couper le souffle.
