Le jardin Wolhwawon à Suwon est inspiré des jardins traditionnels de la province de Guangdong en Chine. Il a été construit suite au traité conclu en 2003 par les administrations locales de la province coréenne de Gyeonggi-do et celle de Guangdong en Chine sur les échanges entre ces deux régions. Afin de renforcer leurs relations amicales, il a été décidé que chacun province créerait un jardin traditionnel qui représenterait l’autre. En conséquence, la construction de Wolhwawon a commencé en juin 2005 et il a ouvert ses portes au public le 17 avril 2006. Ainsi, le jardin Wolhwawon a été conçu à l'instar du jardin éponyme qui se situe à Guangdong. De son côté, un jardin coréen, Haedong Gyeonggiwon, a été aménagé au sein du parc Yuexiu dans la ville de Guangzhou. Ce jardin ressemble au jardin Soswewon qui se trouve à Danyang, dans la région coréenne de Jeollanam-do.
