El lago Gyeongpo, cuyo nombre significa “claro como un espejo”, se halla ubicado a 6 km al nordeste de Gangneung. Conocido también con el nombre de lago Gunja, este gran estanque de agua se formó cuando la boca de la bahía fue cerrada por acumulación de arena y guijarros traídos por las corrientes marinas. Es, asimismo, un sitio de llegada para las aves migratorias. En realidad, solía ser un lago enorme con 12 km de perímetro, pero hoy en día se ha reducido en tamaño por la sedimentación de polvo y arena en sus orillas. El lago Gyeongpo es el escenario de la historia de Hwarang y reliquias culturales de los tiempos prehistóricos, pues en una isla de formaciones rocosas que se halla en su centro se erige un pequeño pabellón sobre el que resalta la presencia de un letrero que dice ‘Joam’, del que se cree, fue escrito por Song Si-Yeol.
