La Estación de Jeongdongjin pertenece a la jurisdicción de la ciudad de Gangneung y es la estación de tren más próxima al mar. En términos geográficos, se ubica exactamente en el lado oriental de la península a la altura de la puerta Gwanghwamun del palacio Gyeongbokgung, en Seúl. Este lugar empezó a operar como estación ferroviaria hacia 1962 y servía para el transporte de bienes y mercancías de las minas de carbón cercanas. Pero con el decaimiento de la actividad minera, la población también decayó y hacia principios de la década de 1990 ya casi no operaban servicios de trenes. La emisión del drama coreano "Reloj de Arena", filmado parcialmente aquí, le dio nuevo renombre nacional a la Estación de Jeongdongjin. Desde ese entonces, mucha gente acude aquí para ver el primer amanecer del año (tanto el 1° de enero como el primer día del año lunar). La Estación está conectada a la línea que lleva hasta la Estación de Cheongnyangni, en Seúl.
