예술촌이 형성된 것은 10여 년 전부터다. 폐교된 강릉초등학교를 예술창작 인촌으로 개조하고, 이 주변을 공방 길로 가꿔놓았다. 집집마다 파랗고 노랗게 칠을 해 놓고 골목에는 그림이 그려진 기와장이나 나무, 돌 등의 오브제로 아기자기하게 꾸며놓았다. 공방 길에서는 체험도 할 수 있다. 퀼트와 자수, 포크아트, 콩 공예, 커피 로스팅, 목공예, 모빌, 압화, 오죽공예 등 체험거리도 다양하다.
