Busan’s modern movie district was originally little more than a pair of cinemas that were built following Korea’s liberation from Japanese colonial rule over half a century ago. However, major renovations took place ahead of the first Busan International Film Festival (BIFF), and the newly transformed district was named BIFF Square on September 13, 1996.

Having been remade into a cultural tourist attraction promoting the advancement of Korea’s film industry, BIFF Square has contributed to Busan’s status as an international cultural tourist city. The 428 meter-long street stretching from the Buyeong Theater in Nampo-dong to the overpass in Chungmu-dong was divided into “Star Street” and “Festival Street,” and on the eve of the festival each year the “BIFF Square Ground Opening” is held here. During the ceremony, events such as the hand printing of famous movie celebrities and Nunkkot Jeomdeung (snow-flower lighting) take place. A district such as BIFF Square, crowded with first-run theaters in a city is rare not only in Asia but Europe as well, and for this reason it holds great potential. In recent years, the square has grown into a more complex area, featuring not only movie theaters but also shops and leisure facilities, attracting growing numbers of young visitors and tourists.

Bokcheon Museum, an archaeological museum in Busan, opened its doors to the public on October 5, 1996 as a tribute to the long-honored history of Busan from the Samhan Era to the Three Kingdoms Era. The museum displays relics and artifacts excavated from the ancient burial ground in Bokcheon-dong. As many as 169 artifact pieces, including diverse earthenware, weapons, and ruins, found in a series of seven excavations are on display throughout the museum. The array of relics and tombs discovered in the Ancient Tombs in Bokcheon-dong, designated as Historic Site No. 273, are essential to solving the mystery of the Gaya Kingdom, which remains an uncharted, secret land.

Since opening, the museum has been conducting further research at the site of the burial grounds and remains in the local area to better understand the antiquated history and culture of Busan as well as the ancient kingdom of Gaya. The museum, as a reputable venue for historical education and exploration, also holds academic seminars and special exhibitions to share the research results and achievements with scholars and the community alike.

The most famous dish at the restaurant is ‘Nangchae Jokbal’. This cold pigs’ feet dish is a specialty of Nampodong Food Street, but is hard to find in other parts of Korea. The Provisional Capital Memorial Hall was established on June 25, 1984. The memorial hall is significant for its role as the provisional government during the Korean War. The memorial hall was built in 1926 and it was used as the residence for the province governor of Gyeongsangnam-do. When the Korean War began in 1950, the building was repurposed to serve as the provisional government of Korea. Currently, the memorial hall is a great place to learn about Korean history because it contains the historical scenes of the provisional government during the Korean War. It contains exhibitions from the Korean War that display the everyday lives of civilians as well as the political, economic, and cultural aspects of the city of Busan.
