Ganhyeon Tourist Area, which is located 18 kilometers to the west of the city of Wonju, is seated where the Seomgang River and Samsancheon Stream, which are branches of the Namhangang River, come together and meet. 40- to 50-meter-high uniquely-shaped rocks and cliffs on both sides of the river form harmony with thickly wooded forests and the dark blue-colored river, and a vast white sandy beach stretches on the sides of the river to complete the fabulous scenery of the area. The river water is clean and the sandy beach is open and extensive, which makes it a popular summer vacation spot for those who like to play in the water.
* Things to enjoy in Ganhyeon Tourist Area *

Frequently changing flows and depths of the water potentially pose a great safety risk so visitors must be extremely careful when playing in the water. It should be noted that camping, cooking, campfires, fishing, etc., in or by the water are strictly prohibited. It takes approx. 1 hour 20 minutes for a round trip on Sogeumsan Suspension Bridge, which is located by the entrance of the mountain trail within the Ganhyeon Tourist Area, and the bridge boasts the greatest length and largest scale (100 meters high, 200 meters long, 1.5 meters wide) among all mountain walkway bridges in Korea. Beopheungsa Temple was created by Jajangyulsa in 647, called Heungnyeongsa Temple at the time, under the reign of King Jindeok of Silla to enshrine Jinsinsari of Buddha. At that time, Preceptor Jinghyo earned 100 Jinsinsari of Munsubosal and enshrined them at Yangsan Tongdosa Temple, Odaesan Sangwonsa Temple, Seoraksan Bongjeongam, Jeongseon Jeongamsa Temple and Beopheungsa Temple while establishing Jeongmyeolbogung, Hall of Buddha, at each of the places. Inside the Jeongmyeolbogung there is no statue of Buddha and only a wide open window. This is because it is believed that the mountain as a whole is the enshrined Jinsinsari of Buddha himself.
Beopheungsa was once a large temple where over 2,000 monks gathered. Today, most of the temple buildings were lost to a number of fires leaving only a few buildings. The pine wood path from Beopheungsa Temple to Jeongmyeolbogung is one of the most picturesque sites in the nation. The location was originally named Sajasansa but later changed to Sajasan Jeongmyeolbogung in 1939. In addition to the path, the nine peaks (Gubongdae) lined up one after another forms another charming view.

The museum is spread out in a line starting at the trail at the Welcome Center, to the lawn parking lot to the Flower Garden, Water Garden, Main Building, Meditation Hall, Stone Garden, and James Turrell Hall. The four wing-shaped structure of the Main Building is designed using squares, triangles, and circles, reflecting the architect's philosophy of connecting land, sky, and humans. Additionally, the museum runs various experience and educational programs in addition to its permanent and special exhibitions.
Cafe Terrace in the Main Building is the ideal spot to take a rest while enjoying the 360-degree panoramic view of the mountain.
