Jarasum Island takes its name from its view of a hill resembling a terrapin, "jara" in Korean. Comprising four smaller isles—Dongdo, Seodo, Jungdo, and Namdo—the island is being developed with leisure and ecological park amenities. Jungdo features a sprawling cultural park, centered around a lush grassy plaza that spans over 100 meters in diameter. Meanwhile, the west end of the Jarasum Campground is home to Ehwawon, a park designed to immerse visitors in natural ecology. Gangwon Provincial Arboretum, which is operated by Gangwon-do Provincial Government, was opened in 1999 to provide a recreation forest for the community to relaxa and learn about nature in the middle of the city. It comprises about 30 themed gardens, such as the four-season botanical garden, subtropical plant garden, succulent plant garden, and topiary garden, and holds some 1,800 species of plants.
