Pension Yeoneu in Gurye, Jeollanam-do, stands on the site where Korean independence activist Wang Jae-il was born. The mint-green roof gives the place a fairy tale feel, while inside it’s friendly and welcoming. The pension is let out as a single house, which includes an annex building with a large bathtub, a sunroom, and a sun deck. Pyeongsari Park (평사리공원)

Situated along Seomjingang River between Gurye and Hadong, Pyeongsari Park was built for the enjoyment of summer tourists to the area. In addition to the beautiful river, the park is home to campgrounds, numerous shaded rest spots, basketball courts, soccer fields, and an abundance of parking space. Decorated with Jangseung (totem poles, which used to be set at the entrance of villages), the spacious park is full of excellent amenities: barbecue grills, benches, drinking fountains, and clean bathrooms. The sandy banks of the river offer a unique opportunity to catch marsh clams.

Pyeongsari Park and its nearby attractions appeared in Toji (The Land), the epic historical novel by Park Kyung-ni. Visitors may want to tour the group of houses that have been reproduced to commemorate the novel, including the famous Choi Champan House.

Nearby attractions include Hwagae Market, Ssanggyesa Temple, and Seomjingang Maehwa Village, host of the Gwangyang Maehwa Festival.

Gurye is famous for its location near the first national park, Jirisan Mountain, and is home to clean water and spacious fields near Seomjingang River. The main products of this area include a variety of wild herbs, vegetables, sansuyu (cornus fruit) and plums from Jirisan Mountain and Baegunsan Mountain.

Houses with cornus fruit trees are easily found in the district of Sandong-myeon, Gurye-gun and the whole village gets dyed yellow in the spring and red in the fall. The amount of sansuyu from the area accounts for nearly half Korea’s total.

Also, chestnuts are common in Gurye Market as a complex of chestnut tree takes up 1,400 ㏊ of the land.

Jirisan Namwon Baraebong Snowflake Festival is held in Herb Valley and the nearby Baraebong Peak area in Namwon-si, Jeollabuk-do. Organized by Unbong Aehyang Committee, the festival features a variety of winter activities including ice and snow sledding, making snowmen, snowball fights and more. Unbong Herb Valley boasts spectacular snow-covered fields due to its high altitude that keeps the snow from melting.

Guryonggyegok Valley (구룡계곡)

Guryonggyegok Valley, a 3 kilometer-long valley in the northern part of the Jirisan National Park, located in Namwon, Jeollabuk-do, is just the place to enjoy a panoramic view of the unusually shaped rocks and precipitous cliffs. Under the Guryongpokpo Falls, located at the peak of the valley, is a small pond called, ‘Yongso’ (meaning ‘dragon pond’). Legend has it that a dragon lived here before it ascended to heaven. Visitors can tour the valley by driving along the skyway, an extension of the tourist road of Jirisan Mountain, or take an invigorating hike up a mountain by taking the Jeongnyeongchigan route, which extends along the valley to Baemsagol Valley(Banseon) and Nogodan Peak.

Saseongam Hermitage (Gurye) (사성암(구례))

Saseongam Hermitage is a hermitage located at the peak of Osan in Gurye (elevation 531m). It is estimated to have been built during the Baekje period (B.C. 18-A.D. 660). Many people visit it to see the sanctuary where the 53 statues of the Buddhist Avatamsaka Sutra are enshrined. The view of the Seomjingang River and the village from the temple is magnificent, and the refreshing breeze feels as if it penetrates through one's body, leading to its designation as a scenic spot in August 2014.

[Jirisan Trail Course] Inwol-Geumgye

Inwol-Geumgye Trail Course is part of the Jirisan Trail, starting from Inwol-myeon, Namwon-si, Jeollabuk-do, and passing through Deunggujae in Hamyang-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do, before reaching the village of Geumgye. Covering a distance of 20.5 kilometers, completing the trail typically takes around 10 hours, leading many travelers to plan a 1-night, 2-day itinerary. Jirisan Lake Resort stands on a hillside overlooking the Gumakje Lake, which was created by water from the Surakpokpo Fall of the Jirisan Mountain. The Seomjingang Cherry Blossom Trail in Gurye follows National Roads 17 and 19 along the pristine Seomgjingang River. Stretching over 3 kilometers, the trail is lined with cherry blossom trees planted in 1992. As well as being a popular drive course, the trail can also be enjoyed on foot, and is even used as a marathon course. The trail has received recognition as one of the "100 Most Beautiful Roads in Korea." Restaurants along the trail serve local foods such as euneo hoe (sliced raw sweetfish) and minmul maeuntang (spicy freshwater fish stew).
