Iljasan Mountain Natural Park (일자산자연공원)

Iljasan Mountain is the tallest peak in Gangdong-gu, Seoul, providing the western boundary between Gangdong-gu and Hanam-si, Gyeonggi-do. Iljasan Mountain is one of the best spots in Seoul to watch the sunrise. Located on the mountain is the house of Master Lee Jip (pen-name Dunchon), providing a good getaway spot for local residents. Lee Jip was a loyal government official during the reign of King Gongmin during the late Goryeo dynasty. He was forced to move to an underground tunnel in the southwest side of Iljasan Mountain to avoid entrapment by Shin Don, a person of influence at the time. While living in hiding, he took the pen-name Dunchon (meaning drawing back to the countryside) to symbolize the hardships he was going through. The nearby area was named after him, being called Dunchon-dong.

Olympic Park is an impressive leisure facility in which historic remains from the Baekje era share space with modern, state-of-the-art sports stadiums, an eco-friendly forest, and spacious grass fields. The legacy of the 1988 Seoul Olympics, the park not only houses the country’s largest sports arena, but has also become a place where Seoul residents come to relax and unwind.

Spread across approximately 1.45 million square meters, Olympic Park encompasses the land that was once Mongchontoseong Fortress and Mongchonhaeja (manmade lake) from the early Baekje period. The park is divided into several zones, including a leisure sports park, a cultural art park, an eco-park, and the History Experience Park dedicated to the area’s rich historic heritage.

Because Olympic Park is so large and takes over three hours to explore, visitors are advised to familiarize themselves with entrances and exits and travel routes before they start. To further save time, visitors can ride the Road Train (“Hodori Train”) located next to Peace Square.

The Hanseong Baekje Cultural Festival celebrates the history and culture of the Hanseong era of the Baekje dynasty when their capital was in Seoul. Achasan Mountain offers a great view of the sunrise in Seoul, preventing the need to travel all the way to the East Sea to enjoy this beautiful sight. Achasan Mountain is a popular spot to watch the sunrise as it is easily accessible using public transportation and takes only about 15 minutes to hike up to the viewing spot. Hikers and non-hikers alike gather on New Year's Day to greet the sun as the hiking trail consists of well-managed, gradual slopes.

The annual Achasan Sunrise Event first began on January 1, 2000 as the first sunrise event in Seoul and has now beocome one of the most representative events of Seoul, welcoming more than 40,000 visitors every year with cultural performances and other events that wish a prosperous and hopeful new year.
