As the nation began to recover from the aftermath of the Korean War, farmers from the northern Gyeonggi-do region and Ganwon-do gathered around the old Seongdong Station (renamed ‘Hansol Donguibogam’) to sell their produce and wares. The farmers’ impromptu gathering on the fallow farmland to make their transactions soon led to the birth of a new marketplace. With the recent remodeling of the market, including the long-neglected Gyeongdong Theater, the place feels totally renewed and full of energy. Thanks to the renovation and diverse food stalls, the place is always bustling and filled with people.

Starbucks created a multiple cultural space in collaboration with LG Electronics such as LG Gold Star Radio Refresh Center. Every week, local artists and college students present culture and art performances on the stage that recreated the theatre concept. To offer a special experience suitable to an old theater, Starbucks developed the Retro Theater-like CND. Remodeled from the prevoius Italian Embassy, this restaurant boasts an excellent view of the Hangang River and Lotte World Tower. It is a popular place for dates or birthday parties, requiring a reservation at least a month in advance to sit on the terrace with a view of the Hangang River. Among the recommended menus is the Maison Lunch Set, which offers three courses, including appetizers (such as grilled scallops), pasta, and Korean beef steak. The food is served warm, and the utensils are changed frequently for a pleasant meal. There is a glass greenhouse on the outdoor terrace, so guests can enjoy the Hangang River view regardless of the weather.

The K Art Hall (Formerly, Seoul Center of Education and Culture) is located in Yangjae-dong, Seocho-gu district. The natural surroundings are beautiful, and the air is very clean. The center has one basement floor, and eleven floors above ground. Its main facilities include the main theater, which can provide for an audience of 1,000, the Culture Center, Art Exhibit, Education Promotion Center, and the Sports Center. Outside the building are the Grass Square, Sculpture Park and Drive-in Theater. The main theater can hold a variety of performances such as plays, dances, movies, operas, musicals, and others. There are frequently performances for children as well. At times, the theater is used as an international stage, as in the case of the Russian Leningrad Ballet company’s performance in 1991. The Culture Center has guest quarters and convention halls, and so is often used for conferences. The Sports Center has an indoor gymnasium, a swimming pool, health and aerobics rooms, a bowling alley, and a golf practice range. The facilities here are used primarily as a resting area. One unusual facility is the outdoor Drive-in Theater. Called “Karma 21,” the theater can accommodate a total of 250,000 cars. Each car is charged 15,000 won a ticket. Usually the latest releases are shown here. The theater is located in “Yangjae People’s Grove” Park, which boasts a very clean environment. It is the perfect spot to relax while enjoying a movie in the fresh air.

"Yangnyeongsi," which literally means medicine city district, refers to a central Oriental medicine district formed near major cities where medicinal herbs are collected and produced. Yangneongsi were first established by royal order during the Joseon dynasty for the purpose of effective production, distribution and management of medicinal products and herbs.

Seoul Yangnyeongsi Market history is relatively short, having formed naturally in the mid-1960s by medicinal herb merchants who gathered here seeking to sell their products with the city bus terminal and Cheongnyangni Station as their central base. Originally, these merchants came to Seoul through the old Seongdong Station and Chyeongnyangni Station after the Korean War, seeking to sell medicinal herbs and vegetation products that were cultivated and collected in the Gyeonggi-do and Gwangwon-do regions. This small market that was once open on an empty plot of land was later authorized as an official market establishment. Road and railroad developments between Gangwon-do and Seoul were followed and by the 1970s, the market grew into what is now seen today. The name Seoul Yangnyeongsi Market was given by the Seoul mayor in 1995.
