The word “budaejjigae” has two parts: “budae”, or military unit, and “jjigae,” a dish made by boiling ingredients and stock in a pot. It originates from the post-Korean War period, where processed meat from US Army bases was made into a jjigae with vegetables, glass noodles, ramyeon, and the like. While the exact origin of the dish is difficult to establish, a strong tradition of sausage jjigae was established in Uijeongbu, thanks to its proximity to US Army bases. These geographical characteristics created today’s Uijeongbu Budaejjigae Street. Starting with Odeng Sikdang, the origin of the street, restaurants specializing in sausage jjigae entered the area, creating a specialized street and a landmark of Uijeongbu.

Seonungak (한옥카페 선운각)

Seonungak is a hanok cafe facing Doseonsa Temple at the foot of Bukhansan Mountain, the perfect location to take in the beauty of the changing seasons. April 19th National Cemetery (국립4.19민주묘지)

Located at the foot of Bukhansan Mountain, the April 19th National Cemetery was established in memory of the 224 people who lost their lives during the 4.19 Revolution in 1960. The cemetery features a memorial hall and a traditional wooden structure that houses the grave of the historic figure Yu Yeongbong.

At the cemetery is a pond surrounded by sculptures such as "Symbolic Door," "Roots of Democracy," and "Sparks of Justice" and a memorial tower bearing an inscription for the brave patriots who lost their lives during the revolution. Groves of pine, juniper, yew, and maple trees and the well-kept hiking path add a natural charm to the overwhelming ambiance of peace and serenity. Many people visit to see the spring blossoms in May, and throughout the year to take in the glorious scene of the sunset over Bukhansan Mountain.

Uijeongbu Art Library (의정부 미술도서관)

Opened in December 2019, this is the first specialized library in Korea, combining a library with an art museum. The first floor has the Art Ground Exhibition Hall (small-scale space for special exhibitions). In contrast, the second floor has reading rooms and libraries, including libraries for children and young adults. The third floor has the Open Studio and a Multipurpose Hall, intended for artists and cultural events.

Korea Military Academy (육군사관학교)

Korea Military Academy is a place of strict rules, patriotism, and military cadets. It was extremely difficult for outsiders to visit the academy until 1997, when a special tourism course was created. The course showcases the major sites at Korea Military Academy. Starting from the school information center, visitors can see the museum, memorial hall, and exhibition center in a 1.5 hour course. The Military Museum displays treasures and materials from each branch of the military, while visitors can see the history of the military and lifestyle of cadets at the memorial hall. However, the highlight of a trip to Korea Military Academy is watching the Hwarang Ceremony, a parade of cadets which takes place every Saturday at 11:30. In the ceremony, cadets don their formal uniform to march. Touring the academy at 10 is perfect for watching the parade later.

Dream Forest (북서울 꿈의숲)

Dream Forest, previously known as Odong Neighborhood Park, is located in Gangbuk-gu, Seoul. The park is surrounded by cherry blossom trees, and the northern section is filled with maple trees, making the park especially attractive in spring and fall. The Changnyeongwigung Ritual House (Registered Cultural Heritage) has been restored with traditional landscaping such as a pond, pavilion and waterfall created nearby to double the genuine beauty of a traditional Korean park. Major attractions of the park include Wolyeongji Pond, Grass Square, Wolgwangpokpo Falls, Aewoljeong Pavilion, Chilbokji Falls, Event Garden, Children’s Gallery, Wild Grass Garden, Deer Ranch, Exploring Path, Forest Rest, and a water park. The slanted hillside which served as sledding slopes is now a complex cultural space with Buk-Seoul Art Center that houses a fantastic-looking observatory, performance hall, book café, gallery, restaurant, jumping fountain, and children’s playground.
