The Herb Village in Yeoncheon, Gyeonggi-do Province gives a splendid view of Imjingang River. This beautiful oasis is perfect for a relaxing day out of Seoul with the whole family. Colorful flowers, wooden benches, original statues, and a beautiful landscape decorate the whole space of the garden. One can just take a leisurely walk down the hill towards the river while stopping to smell the herbs every once in a while.

If you need some refreshments, there are a couple of restaurants in the garden. If you want to stay overnight, there is beautiful guesthouse that offers comfortable accommodation. The village also has an herb jjimjilbang (Korean sauna) that creates a romantic ambience after sunset with candle lights, and foot baths that use different herbs can be found outside. The village is just a short drive from Seoul and one can enjoy a scenic view of the surroundings along the way.

Dora Observatory is the closest DMZ observatory to Panmunjeom. From Dora Observatory, one can see not only the Panmunjeom but also the village of Daeseong-dong within the DMZ, mountains and farmlands on the North Korean side, and the city of Gaeseong, a North Korean city and the historic capital of Goryeo (918-1392). Individual visits are not allowed. The observatory can only be accessed through the DMZ Peace Tour, which embarks from Imjingak Pavilion after reservation. All visitors are required to bring their identification, such as passports or Alien Registration Card (ARC).

The 3rd Tunnel is the third of its kind built by North Korea for the purpose of invading South Korea. It was discovered in 1978. Among the four tunnels located so far, it is closest to Seoul (about 52 km). It has a total length of 1.6 km and a x_width of 2 m. It is estimated that nearly 30,000 personnel can move through the tunnel every hour. Visitors to the 3rd Tunnel must reserve the tour in advance. The tour starts from the Imjingak Pavilion. All visitors are required to bring their identification, such as passports or Alien Registration Card (ARC).

Dorasan Station is the closest South Korean railway station to North Korea. Initially, the station was served by a railway that connected Seoul with China and Europe, but it was destroyed during the Korean War (1950-1953). The station and the railway were rebuilt in 2002 to prepare for the railway’s reconnection to North Korea. Dorasan Station is located 55 km away from Seoul and 205 km from Pyeongyang. All visitors are required to bring their identification, such as passports or Alien Registration Card (ARC).

Byukchoji Gardens is made up of a Korean-style and a European-style garden. It is home to nearly 1,400 species of plants. Each garden is organized under a single theme, such as mythology, adventure, and freedom. Byukchoji Gardens also features walking trails, ponds, greenhouses, and lawns. Byukchoji Pond has a Lotus Flower Garden with lotus flowers blooming. Visitors can walk on the trails built above the pond to examine the flowers up close. Nearby tourist sites include Bakdalsan Mountain, Paju Book City, and the Paju Samneung Cluster, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Yeoldugaeulgyegok Valley is known for its stunning landscape of rocky cliffs and crystal-clear streams. It derives its name, meaning "twelve streams", from a time when no bridges existed, and people had to cross twelve streams to travel from Beopsu-dong to Deokdun-ri. With its clear, shallow waters, the area becomes a popular spot for vacationers during the summer.

Sinbuk Hot Springs, the only sodium bicarbonate hot springs in the metropolitan area is located amidst beautiful streams and forests. The hot spring water comes from 600 meters underground creating a soft and smooth texture which helps with anti-aging and general skin care. Along with the hot springs bath, saunas were built as well as a resting area that attracts a diverse clientele.

Typhoon Observatory was built on December 3, 1991 by Invincible Typhoon Korean Army. The observatory is situated on Suribong Peak, the highest point of Bikkisan Mountain. It is located 65 kilometers and 140 kilometers from Seoul and Pyeongyang respectively. It is famous in that the location is the closest to the Military Demarcation Line, being only 800 meters and 1,600 meters away from the MDL and North Korean checkpoint respectively.

The observatory houses a Christian church, Catholic church, statue of the Virgin Mary, Buddhist sanctum, belfry and other facilities where soldiers are able to participate in religious ceremonies. Also, Manghyangbi Monument for displaced person, Monument for Korean War, and Boy’s Tank Corps Memorial can be seen in the area. The Exhibition Hall presents daily necessities collected from Pilseunggyo Bridge of Imjingang in North Korea and some detection equipment that armed espionage agents used when they did infiltration after the ceasefire.

The Gunnam Flood Control Site is situated near the border between North and South Korea just six kilometers away from the demarcation line. More than 97% of the land around the Gunnam flood control dam is part of North Korea. The site is effective in controlling the flooding of the Imjingang River and improving irregular water flow. This area is a key wintering site for various migratory birds such as white-naped cranes, and hooded cranes, with up to 200 birds spending every winter in the area. Given the unique characteristics created by the geographical condition of the area near the border between South and North Korea and the natural environment of the Imjingang River, the site is a great natural ecological habitat for various wildlife.

The Gunnam Flood Control Theme Park features “The Story of Peace and Love told by Cranes” as its theme. Various story-telling facilities are installed, such as the drum of peace, a wishing tree, and crane structures. There are also outstanding facilities to minimize impact on the environment, such as an alternative habitat for cranes, fishway ecology, and ecological wetlands. The facility makes it a great place to learn about and experience ecology.
