Le temple de Haedong Yonggungsa se situe sur le littoral nord-est de Busan. Le lieu offre en plus du temple un fantastique point d’observation sur la mer. La plupart des temples de Corée sont situés au milieu des montagnes et il est donc ainsi rare de trouver un temple le long de la côte. Le grand moine Naong fit construire Haedong Yonggungsa en 1376 sous le règne du roi U de la dynastie Goryeo.

Haesu Gwaneum Daebul (grande déesse bouddhiste de la mer) qui fait face à la mer, le sanctuaire principal de Daeung-jeon, le sanctuaire de Yongwangdang, le sanctuaire bouddhiste de Gulbeop, et la pagode de trois étages et ses quatre lions forment l’essentiel du temple. Le sanctuaire principal du temple fut reconstruit en 1970 en respectant les couleurs d’origines utilisées pour ce type de construction.

Sur la droite dans une grotte se trouve un sanctuaire bouddhiste unique en son genre tandis qu’en face du sanctuaire principal se trouve une pagode de trois étages décorées de quatre lions symbolisant chacun une émotion différente : joie, colère, tristesse, bonheur.

Parmi les autres points d'intérêts du temple, on compte également les 108 marches et les lanternes de pierre bordant le paysage rocheux. Le temple permet ainsi d'apprécier la beauté de la mer tout en écoutant le son apaisant des vagues. Les levers de soleil sont aussi très appréciés par les visiteurs.

Le mois d’avril avec ses cerisiers en fleurs, est une période que l'on recommande pour visiter ce temple unique. La naissance de Bouddha est aussi célébrée en avril (en fonction du calendrier lunaire), le temple est alors entièrement éclairé de lanternes et offre une vue nocture spectaculaire.
