Il doit son nom dans le fait qu’il proposait de nombreux produits importés des Etats-Unis et des forces américaines en Corée durant la guerre de Corée. Le marché fut aussi connu en tant que marché international dans la mesure où on pouvait y trouver de nombreux produits venus de l’étranger, produits qui étaient difficiles à trouver à l’époque en Corée. Le marché est aujourd’hui plus petit qu’avant dans le mesure où les produits de l’étranger sont maintenant plus facilement importés, mais sa réputation est resté intacte. Quelques produits importés, comme des liqueurs, des vêtements, des décorations et autres accessoires sont toujours à la vente dans le marché. Il existe aussi une partie des lieux qui restent ouverte tard dans la soirée (de 18h à minuit). En plus des nombreux restaurants coréens et internationaux, vous pourrez profiter également de concerts organisés régulièrement aux abords du marché.
