Le temple fut construit par le moine bouddhiste Myeongbonguksa en 1265, au pied de la montagne Seounsan. Le nom du temple fut choisi par le prêtre Naonghwasang, qui, parcourant le pays à la recherche d'un site pour établir le temple, avait rêvé à cet endroit d'un dragon descendant du ciel sur un nuage (Cheongnyong, signifie “dragon du ciel”, en caractères chinois).
Le temple abrite les salles “Daeungjeon” (Trésor nº 824), Gwaneumjeon, Gwaneum Cheonghyanggak, Myeongbujeon, et en face de ces dernières se trouve la pagode de trois étages, oeuvre du moine Myeongbonguksa. La salle Daeungjeon, datant de l'époque Goryeo est précieuse d'un point de vue architectural.
Ce temple est plus connu pour être le lieu où résidaient la troupe Namsadangpae (troupe d'artistes qui donnaient des représentations folkloriques), qui apparut autour des années 1900. C'est ici qu'ils passaient l'hiver, s'entrainant avant l'arrivée du printemps, époque à laquelle ils partaient en tournée à travers le pays, en commençant par le marché Anseong. Vous pourrez voir le spectacle folklorique de la troupe Namsadangpae au village Namsadang, en face du temple.
Les sites touristiques suivant se trouvent aux environs, entre autres: Montagne Seounsan, montagne Chiljangsan, Mirinae Seongji, barrage Gosam, marché Anseong, tour commémorative du mouvement pour l'indépendance du 1er mars, forteresse Jukju Sanseong.
