El templo Gwaneumsa se ubica en la falda de la ladera nororiental del monte Hallasan de Jeju. Este templo se cree que fue construido por primera vez en tiempos de la dinastía Tamna (476 a.e.c.-1005 d.e.c.). Sin embargo, no hay evidencia concreta que sustente esta teoría. Hacia principios de los años 1700, durante la dinastía Joseon, cuando se proclamó el neoconfucionismo como doctrina de Estado, se llevó adelante una política de destrucción de templos budistas en la isla de Jeju y Gwaneumsa fue demolido. La reconstrucción llegó de la mano de la monje Anbongryeokwan en 1912 y fue renovado íntegramente en 1974. El templo cuenta con un salón principal, el salón Myeongbujeong, el campanario Sansingak y la puerto Bulimun.

Hay muchos patrimonios históricos budistas en los alrededores del templo que llaman el interés de los visitantes, como la estatua de madera del buda femenino sentado, designado como Patrimonio de Jeju en 1999. Otro lugar es un hábitat natural de cerezos, Monumento Natural de Jeju; y el Sitio Histórico del 3 de Abril, en conmemoración de una revuelta popular.

También se puede encontrar en las cercanías el arboreto Moksokwan, una entrada al monte Hallasan, el valle Oerimok, el valle Tamna y el cono volcánico Gaewol Oreum. Un sendero que lleva al monte Hallasan, conocido como Ruta Gwaneumsa, es particularmente famoso por su follaje otoñal.
