Daejeon Jagwangsa Temple (자광사(대전))

Legend has it that the region of Hakha-dong was where the gods lived when they periodically came down from the heavens. When Jagwangsa Temple was built in the district, Song Siyeol saw it as a sign and created a village school near the temple to train his pupils. It was his hope that the sacred land would aide in the raising of gifted students who would grow to serve their community and country. When building the school, Song Siyeol also planted a juniper tree that, 300 years later, still proudly stands by Jagwangsa Temple.

Upon entering the temple area, visitors will find to their left the Seongjeonnyeongdangji Memorial Stone, which serves to commemorate Song Siyeol and his school. Next to the memorial stone is a pond in which carp swim lazily around lotus flowers. From the white wooden chair in front of the pond, there is a large bell to the left and main Dharma Hall to the right.

The Sejong National Arboretum, which is about to open as the first urban arboretum in Korea, was built on an area of 65 ha adjacent to the Sejong Government Complex, where several government ministries are located. It is possible to see 2,834 species of 1.72 million plants (including 45,958 trees) under various themes such as the nation's largest four-season greenhouse, traditional Korean garden, Cheongryujiwon for study, and bonsai garden. It is another national arboretum established following the Baekdudaegan National Arboretum following the National Arboretum Expansion Plan for conserving and developing genetic tree resources by climate and vegetation zone.

Seodaejeon Park (서대전공원)

Seodaejeon Park is located at the site of a previous military base that closed in 1975. The site served as the venue for the 1993 Daejeon Expo, and was turned into the current park visitors see now at that time. Sangsoo Herb Land is an arboretum which houses 1,000 species of herbs throughout its 82,645㎡ (25,000 pyeong) area. The glass greenhouse, spanning over 9,917㎡ (3,000 pyeong), keeps herbs fresh and green, even in the winter season. Herb Land is well-known for their flowers that bloom year-round, as well their diverse events including the Herb Land Festival held in May each year, wedding ceremonies, banquets, hands-on program classes, and more.

Sangsoo Herb Land provides a wide array of programs for visitors. The major event is the Herb Land Festival, aiming to spread knowledge on the use of diverse herbs, including introducing the aromatic value of herb plants in landscaping and as a natural insecticide, as well as the health benefits of herbal foods.
