Located at the foot of Bukhansan Mountain, the April 19th National Cemetery was established in memory of the 224 people who lost their lives during the 4.19 Revolution in 1960. The cemetery features a memorial hall and a traditional wooden structure that houses the grave of the historic figure Yu Yeongbong.

At the cemetery is a pond surrounded by sculptures such as "Symbolic Door," "Roots of Democracy," and "Sparks of Justice" and a memorial tower bearing an inscription for the brave patriots who lost their lives during the revolution. Groves of pine, juniper, yew, and maple trees and the well-kept hiking path add a natural charm to the overwhelming ambiance of peace and serenity. Many people visit to see the spring blossoms in May, and throughout the year to take in the glorious scene of the sunset over Bukhansan Mountain.

5.5 Km    139     2023-10-26

43-2, Simin-ro 121beon-gil, Uijeongbu-si, Gyeonggi-do

This is the largest traditional market in Uijeongbu and one of the largest in northern Gyeonggi-do. It offers a large collection of goods for sale, so it is beloved by Uijeongbu locals and people from the surrounding areas. Because of its size, the market has multiple entrances that lead to the four zones of Ga, Na, Da, and Ra. Its large size and prominence also mean the market is organized and hygienic. The market is quite famous for its Fried Chicken Street, which serves whole chicken fried to order. A less famous but no less delicious secret is the “food department store” on the first underground floor. This is a massive collection of restaurants and food carts serving a great variety of meals. When one steps into the “department store,” one feels as if one is truly among the locals in their favorite hangout, with middle-aged diners gathering for a meal or some drinks with their friends. Note that for some dishes like seafood, there is no fixed price. The market price is used instead. But no matter what stall one visits, the stalls tend to be quite generous with their food, so if you are interested in some local gourmand experience, make sure to visit.

Unlike its name, meaning “fishcake restaurant,” Odeng Sikdang specializes in sausage jjigae. Its history can be traced back to the ‘60s, when the first-generation owner opened the restaurant. Now in the third generation, the restaurant remains in its old spot. The restaurant, in fact, began as a food stall selling fishcakes. Its sausage jjigae began as a stir-fried dish featuring ingredients obtained from the nearby US Army base (ham, sausage, bacon, etc.), which over time turned into a jjigae to be eaten with rice. Odeng Sikdang’s sausage jjigae is an exercise in harmony, where processed meat products are used in tandem with Korean-style broth, rice cakes, and noodles to create a flavorful stew. Because of its fame, it is often quite crowded, but prompt service and rapid turnover mean that one usually does not have to spend hours in a queue outside peak hours (weekday lunch and dinner, weekends). Note that the restaurant has an annex, where groups of 5 or more are directed towards.
