Gwangju History & Folk Museum opened in 1987 as the largest museum operated by a city government in Korea. It was established for the purpose of preserving valuable Korean folk relics and putting them on exhibit to increase the public's cultural awareness. The museum displays the rich and colorful lifestyles and folk culture of Korea's southwestern regions including Gwangju and Jeollanam-do.

First floor of the museum displays food, clothing, housing, livelihood, and handicrafts while the second floor showcases folk games, traditional customs and folk religions. The museum also utilizes miniature and diorama displays to recreate scenes from the past. A total of eight videotech systems in the museum allow visitors to enjoy vivid demonstrations of the region's nine intangible cultural relics.

The World Human Rights Cities Forum (WHRCF) is held as an annual event in Gwangju, Republic of Korea, to realize the vision of becoming a human rights city since 2011. The Forum has become a gathering place to share the spirit of justice and community, the same values under which the citizens of Gwangju resisted the ruthless oppression of the then-military regime in May 1980. Within the WHRCF participants exchange experiences on challenges and achieved success in human rights especially at the local level while expanding their own scope of understanding. Now, the Forum has become a major human rights event and distinctive platform for sharing and networking amongst human rights cities, human rights organizations, activists, and miscellaneous stakeholders in the area of human rights. Namgwangju Market formed naturally in the area around the old Namgwangju Station, selling everything from seafood and fresh produce to household items. The market suffered a lot when the train station was closed, but it is still very famous for fresh fish, which comes in every morning between 2 and 5 AM. Due to this, there are many raw fish restaurants in the area, with fresh fish and very affordable prices.

Every October, Gwangju Chungjang Festival takes place around the area of Chungjang-ro, a representative street in Gwangju where old history and fast changes exist together. The festival's main event, Chungjang World Parade, includes floats with various themes from the 13 districts of Gwangju. The street is recreated in various stages of changes between the 70s and the early 2000s. Visitors can also enjoy tea at old-style cafes or take black-and-white photos at a photo studio.

Yeoro is a hanok guesthouse in a quiet residential part of Sansu-dong, Gwangju, Jeollanam-do. The guesthouse has four ondol rooms, all equipped with a toilet and refrigerator. There is a shared washing machine (free of charge) in an outside bathroom. For breakfast, home-made sweet pumpkin porridge is served. Guests can take part in traditional crafts such as red clay dyeing, making injeolmi ricecakes or gangjeong puffed rice, and pressed-flower hand mirror making.
